What is Glycerin soaps
Glycerin soaps are soaps that contain glycerin, a component of fat or oil. They are recognizably different from other soaps because they are translucent. The clarity is due to the alignment of the soap molecules, which can be induced through the addition of alcohol and sugar. This is usually done for homemade glycerin soaps that are not remeltable.
The process for making glycerin soaps was well known as of 1857 in the Western world. In modern industrial soap-making, the glycerin is usually separated from the soap to be resold and used in a wide variety of areas such as for personal care products, pharmaceuticals, chemical intermediates, and food processing.
What benefits does glycerin soap offer
Unlike many OTC soaps, pure glycerin soap is all-natural. It doesn’t contain alcohol, fragrances, or other chemical-based ingredients that could irritate your skin.
This makes glycerin soap vegan-friendly and a great option for people with sensitive skin.
Your skin’s natural oils are often stripped during the bathing process, whether from hot water or harsh products. Glycerin can help lock in your skin’s natural moisture and prevent over-drying.
This may be especially beneficial if you experience drying conditions like:
- acne
- dermatitis (eczema)
- dry skin
- psoriasis
- rosacea
At the same time, glycerin is nongreasy. This means it’s a good choice for anyone with oily or combination skin.
Glycerin may also have anti-aging benefits. According to a mice study reported in Science Daily, the ingredient can help even out your skin tone and texture. This may reduce the appearance of fine lines and other surface blemishes.
How to use glycerin soap
You can use glycerin soap every day as part of your regular skincare routine. Like other soaps, glycerin soap can cause stinging or burning if it gets into your eyes. If you exercise caution when cleansing your face, this shouldn’t be an issue.
How to make glycerin soap without lye
Well, you can take a little short-cut! It’s called using Melt and Pour Soap.
You simply purchase large blocks of ready made REAL soap that have been specially processed to melt very easily, melt it on down, add whatever additives you like, and you have your own soap creation!
NOTE: Melt and pour soap has previously been made using lye, plus the additives to help it melt easily and smoothly. But YOU don’t have to have anything to do with the lye and oil saponification process because it’s already been done for you! Yay! Right?
The benefit to starting out with Melt & Pour soap making is being able to try out soap making easily. You’ll be able to decide if it’s something you want to pursue for real, without having to be concerned with dealing with lye. You can be as creative as you like, and get a feel for whether or not making your own handmade soap is something you’ll enjoy.
You get a feel for the kinds of additives you love, and the kinds of scents you like. You can even change the composition of the melt and pour soap a bit by adding clays, salts, honey, etc.! Pretty cool, right?
Steps for “Making Soap Without Lye” (Even a Child Can Do It!)
I love melt and pour soap making because you can let your creative freak side fly without worrying about the lye! (Hey! That rhymed! 😉
You can get the free Guide to Melt & Pour Soap Making Basics (with Recipes & Ideas) in the Healing Harvest Homestead Resource Library. To get it now, just fill out the form at the end of this article!
OK—Here are directions:
Step 1) Cut Up the Block of Soap
If you are doing this project with kids, you’ll probably want to do the cutting for them, unless they are older and proficient with a large knife. You’ll need to cut the block into approximately 1 inch cubes.
**Where do you get Melt & Pour Soap Base?
You can find it at good craft stores, but I’ll be honest: I don’t recommend those blocks of soaps. The quality is just not that great, and they will cost you more, too.
When I’m making Melt & Pour soap, I buy mine from Amazon. They have lots of choices, ingredients, and sizes too. Plus, the price is right! Here’s a Honey Melt and Pour soap to take a look at! Lots of people love Goat’s Milk Soap, too! There are many other choices as well.
Step 2) Get Your Double Boiler Ready
For the melting part, you’ll need a double boiler so the heat on the bottom of the pan isn’t too intense on the melting soap. I have a double boiler pan I use for this kind of soap making, but if you don’t, and you’re not making a huge amount of melt and pour, here’s another way:
You can actually use a Mason Jar set into a pan with an inch or two of cool water. Heat it gently, and your soap will melt just fine! Keep the heat set to a little above low so you don’t crack your glass. If you are using a Mason jar set up as your double boiler, I probably wouldn’t let the kids help with this part—just in case. Just my opinion.
Step 3) Melt It Down
Gently stir your soap cubes as they melt down–it will go a little faster. You’ll be surprised how fast melt and pour actually melts! I always am!
Step 4) Add Your Color & Scent
Once your soap is melted down, you can add your colorant and scents. Follow the directions if you are using some kind of dye for soap. I prefer to use natural materials like clays or powdered herbs. For one pound, start with about 1/2 tablespoon, then make adjustments until you’re happy with it.
Glycerin coconut oil soap
Ingredients
- 14 oz vegetable oil (lard, tallow, or other oil)
- 5.5 oz coconut oil
- 8 oz castor oil
- 3/4 oz safflower oil (or sunflower oil)
- 4 oz lye (100% sodium hydroxide)
- 5 oz filtered or distilled water (find the best water filtration systems here)
Instructions
-
-
To begin making your glycerin soap base cover your work surface with newspaper. Always use gloves and safety goggles when handling lye. (Learn all about lye in soap making.) Have vinegar on hand in case lye spills or splashes occur.
-
Measure water into a heatproof container. Measure lye and slowly add to water, stirring until dissolved. (Never add water to lye.) Allow lye water to cool to 150°F.
-
Mix all of the oils together and heat to 135°F – it’s easiest to use a slow cooker for this. Add the lye water to the oils in a slow steady stream.
-
Bring the mixture to a trace, or when it looks like vanilla pudding. An immersion blender works best for this.
-
Keep the heat at medium for a few hours, much like making crockpot soap. When the glycerin soap mixture reaches the gel phase, it will look translucent like petroleum jelly. Stir once in a while, but not all the time. If it gets too thick, you can use a potato masher. I have a stainless steel one I use just for this.
-
Test the Soap Base
After a few hours, take a bit of the soap and try to dissolve it in a cup of hot water. If it dissolves, you can move on. If it stays in a lump or has oil floating on the top, you need to “cook” it more. Leave it for half an hour and try again. If it’s ready, then add:
-
13 oz alcohol – 70% or higher (NOT rubbing alcohol)
-
3 oz liquid glycerin
-
Be very careful as alcohol has a low flash point and can start on fire. This is why I prefer the crockpot to the stove for heating. You may need to mash the soap up some. Do a bit at first, then do more in a little while. If you mash too much at once, you may get a lot of suds. This process can take a few hours, so be patient.
-
When the soap is all dissolved, there will probably be a few particles floating on top. These are impurities and must be removed. Skim them off and throw them away, or you can place them in a jar, cover with hot water, and use for dish soap.
-
When the soap is fully dissolved combine 8 oz sugar and 5 oz water and boil until the sugar is completely dissolved. Do not leave any crystals undissolved. When it is totally liquid, pour into the soap base. Stir and cover, then cool to 145°F.
-
Now you can pour glycerin soap base into a mold. I use a glass cake pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit for a week or so. When it is clear (it may take a week or two) then cut it into pieces and store in a glass jar.
What to look for in over-the-counter (OTC) glycerin soap
Glycerin is water-soluble and clear in color. It’s also naturally fragrance-free. If you can’t see or smell the product before buying, look at the ingredient label to make sure it doesn’t contain additives like fragrances.
Many OTC soaps contain glycerin along with other ingredients. This may include essential oils, dyes, and synthetic materials. If there are other ingredients listed along with glycerin on a label, this means that you’re not looking at pure glycerin soap.
Although additives won’t render glycerin ineffective, they increase your risk for irritation and other side effects.
Liquid glycerin is available at your local food store, but you can’t just open the bottle and use the liquid as soap. You can use liquid glycerin to make your own bar of glycerin soap, though.
Where u can buy glycerin soap

This is a mixed review but overall it gets 5-stars because after buying many different brands and types of similar soaps, I can’t find anything better that meets all my primary criteria, thus reasons I’m giving it 5-stars are as follows:
– It did not bother my allergies at all whatsoever,
– It does not have perfume of any type listed or that I can smell,
– It only has 5 natural ingredients vs other brands with a long list of weird stuff,
– It actually works and gets you clean,
– It does not dry out my skin probably because 1 of its 5 ingredients is vegetable oil believe it or not (and no, it does NOT feel oily at all whatsoever).
Only used one bar so far.
Did not last as long as I remember Glycerine soaps lasting, but at least the same or a little longer than regular soaps.
I was down to the end of a Nuetrogena bar and compressed them together.
The next few mornings the Nuetrogena bar always had slushing, where the Clearly Natural was always dry and slush free.
The soap dish will stay real nice and clean with this soap because of the lack of this slushing effect.
Too early to tell if it will help my dry winter skin.
It lathers perfectly.
I use it for shaving also, and my face and neck have had noticably less shaving rash.
The bottom line on anything (from dog food to the camera you buy) though is to look at the ingredients and or parts:
