Chlorine music meaning

First opinion

At this point, we officially have launched into the songs from Trench that are the most confusing to me, and that I feel the least well-equipped to be able to explain; but we are going to jump into one of the most confusing songs from this album “Chlorine”. You can watch the music video so you can maybe relate or get more of what we’re going to talk about today.

I think that “Chlorine” shares some thematic similarities to “Tear in My Heart”; remember when he was basically talking about his wife Jenna, and how sometimes being in a relationship with her, and being married to her, it can be painful, and it’s like having a tear in his heart, but overall, it helps him to grow stronger, and it makes him feel alive, she helps him become a better person; and based on the song “Chlorine”, I think that Tyler Joseph has a very similar relationship to the songwriting process. A lot of people have theorised that this song is about suicide, but I don’t see it, it doesn’t carry out throughout the entire song. People say “Oh! Sipping on chlorine is a way to kill yourself”, and I’m sure it is, but I believe it’s just a metaphor, just in the same way that a tear in your heart apparently makes you stronger, happier, and more alive, but it’s also painful. Chlorine is poisonous, yes! But it is also a cleaning agent, and so Tyler’s insides have never been cleaner, then when he writes a song, and why I have said that it’s about songwriting is actually confirmed by Tyler in an interview this year, as he had this to say about Ned, the cute creature in the “Chlorine” music video,

“Yeah, Ned is a cool guy. He’s our friend who represents a lot of things. It’s hard to explain, Ned is our friend in real life, he was the director of this video. We’ve been friends and cooperating for a long time and it’s very cool to work with loved ones, the projects turn out to be very special, we really feel each other”

and then he continued to say,

“Ned really does represent a lot of things but specifically, I guess you would say he really represents this idea of creativity, trying to take care of it, and trying to please it, or appease it. It’s kind of that thing in you that tells you whether or not something is good and when you get to the stage we’re at you realize listening to that becomes more and more important, because a lot of people start talking, and trying to influence you and the decisions you can make creatively”

Second opinion

My understanding of the newest Twenty Øne Piløts’ music video.

Up to the point right before this video’s release, we were presented to the universe of Dema, Nico, the Niners, Banditos, etc. Twenty One Pilots had shown us an atmosphere of fear, terror, insecurity, and other negative feelings. These negative feelings were so strong they even had a personification: Blurryface (later called Nico).

I read a lot of theories for Chlorine’s video saying that Ned was the representation of depression, or anxiety, or this bad emotion, or that bad feeling. But why would there be ANOTHER representation of bad feelings if we already have Nico and Nine bishops, why if this has already been developed in another narrative (Jumpsuit-Nico and the Niners-Levitate videos sequence)? So my guess: Ned is not a representation for anything bad, it’s the opposite.

Ned is the opposite of Blurryface/Nico.

Ned represents the good thing in us that Tyler (representing people that suffer from any of the psychological stuff) starts to re-approach. Ned is hidden and untouchable and far away, and Tyler is now focusing on bringing him back close to himself. So he fills the pool –which is himself, his mind (and body)– with chlorine, which is the good things we have in life, good thoughts, positive people that bring us positive energy, happy memories and all that. He focus on keeping these positive things in his mind so that Ned can come back to him.

When the pool is fully filled with chlorine, meaning that Tyler’s mind is now full of good things, Ned arrives, feels comfortable to approach and jumps into the pool; once inside it, he evolves (his horns grow), because keeping a positive mind develops positive emotions, feelings and sensations.

Other elements that appear in the video, not necessarily connected with the main storyline:

– The reflections of Tyler and Josh on Blurryface’s era clothes:

For me this could be a way of showing that memories of old times where things were harder (for examples, a time when a person was going through a depression crisis) since Blurryface era was a bit darker then Trench is being. The fact that it is in the reflection could mean that it is in the past, since there’s the idea of mirrors showing what’s behind us. Also, there is the idea of the mirrors being the portal to another world, where everything is the opposite, so it that’s the case, Tyler and Josh wearing Blurryface era clothes on the reflection world means they are the opposite of that in the real world, meaning they are in a better and happier place. The last point I can make from this is that this reflections appear when the pool is empty, which means: it’s before they start filling it with positivity, so memories are still messy and it’s easier for sad memories to come up.

– Tyler’s cup:

Tyler carries a cup throughout the video but he never drinks whatever’s inside it. He reaches for the cup many times and leads it to his mouth but for some reasons never effectively drink.

This cup contains the opposite of chlorine. If chlorine helps cleaning the mind and brings happy healthy positive thoughts, the thing in this cup makes the opposite. This represents the fact that when someone is struggling with anxiety, depression of any other problem it is so easy to lose the progress, because we are always one step away from starting to have negative thoughts again, mainly because of the difficulty of filling the pool with chlorine. Tyler struggle to fill the pool and bring Ned close to him. So we always have a cup of negativity in our hands and we have to be strong not to drink up.

One can observe that many times Josh keeps looking at Tyler with the manners of someone who is checking on something, Josh is keeping an eye on Tyler, he is taking care of him, so he is constantly looking at Tyler to make sure he is not going to drink up. Josh represents all the good friends and family that helps so much people that struggle with psychological diseases.

In fact, there are moments where Tyler leaves the cup aside: when he is focusing on filling the pool with chlorine. So, when he is completely focused on doing something, on being positive, he forgets about the cup, he gets away from it, the happy place he built is not so close to fall apart.

– Mysterious hand handing Tyler the cup:

Tyler completely forgot about the cup, until someone reminds him of it. All we see is a hand handing him the cup again, after he spent a lot of time without it. This hand is not Josh’s, or course, why would Josh hand him back the cup he so carefully checked on Tyler not to drink up? The hand is Nico’s. He, as the representation of Tyler’s insecurities, hand him the cup as Tyler is once again in a moment of fragility. When this scene takes place we see Tyler inside the once again empty pool along with Ned. So we see Ned inside the empty pool, that’s right, no chlorine but yet Ned is there. That means that Ned (positivity) can also last (not only negativity lasts), and once he approached Tyler, he stayed by his side even when the pool returned to being empty, and that alone has a meaning.

– The pool returning to being empty at the end:

After all the effort they put in filling it, it is again empty just like that? Well, of course no one has depression or anxiety (or, even, say, bipolarity, etc, etc) cured like that (unfortunately). He struggled and he achieved to build a clean space in his mind, but this does not avoid him from having breakdowns, things might come back to a not so good place from time to time, but that doesn’t mean he went all the way down to square one. He still has Ned with him, that is: he still has the PERSPECTIVE of things being good, even though he is going through a bad phase he is not believing that “all is lost, it’s not worth trying” etc, which are common thoughts for a person with depression.
